Ever since I attended Jo Frances’ Newborn Workshop back in 2012, I have been photographing newborns like a mad thing, each of them crumpled and squishy with that new-baby smell.

BUT I’ve been struggling to make the images my own. I’ve tried the backdrop thing, the pretty hat thing, the contortionist poses thing and the rocking and shushing to sleep thing has been working like a dream. But as much as I have loved the images I’m creating, they’ve always felt like a replication of someone else’s ideas, someone else’s style.

That was until I met little Zerah.

I could not have asked for a better baby to photograph. His skin is perfectly flawless. At three weeks (plus one week overdue) he is surprisingly still very bendy and pliable. He was out cold asleep just as I arrived (no patting nor shushing required, PERFECT), I got the beautiful bendy baby shots (but I refined them, made them simple and natural, well lit, cute) then he woke up and gave us some gurgles and eye contact. And then he quietly nodded off again for the family portraits. A dream!

So with the perfect model, the posing skills from Jo and my recent experience, lovely parents (and a Dad who looked just like the cat who got the milk), big big windows, and my old faithful 50mm lens; I decided it was time to let things get a little looser. I stopped thinking. I started looking, I started feeling. I took photos are clean and simple, soft and warm, delicate and natural. Photos that look exactly like the type of photos I want to take.

This might just be my favourite shoot to date.

What do you think? Melting much? Do you like what happens when I shoot with my heart and not my head?

I do.

You know what I love to photograph most?

PRIDE.
LOVE.
TRUTH.

Maybe I watched Moulin Rouge one too many times, maybe I’ve read one too many articles about buzzwords.

Or maybe, just maybe, I finally put my finger on exactly what makes me tick as a photographer.

I could never photograph architecture, or products with the same passion that I approach a wedding day. I’ve told you before about my sympathy crying, but what I didn’t mention is that sometimes I don’t even need to see anyone else crying to get all misted up. Looking at a new Dad holding his precious baby in his arms and looking down into their face with that incredible look of adoration and love. Pride. Or seeing the Mother of the bride beaming with love as her daughter comes down the aisle looking as beautiful as the sunrise. Those little moments get me going too.

I feel so lucky and amazed that I can capture these moments of life. Real life. That people let me see them with their whole hearts out on their sleeves. So often people say to me “we don’t want really stiff posey pictures”. Well ok then, you twisted my arm. Not. Too long has portrait photography been about smiles into the camera. A portrait should capture the soul not just the face.

Well so anyway, I’m feeling a bit philosophical, because I managed to capture a whole lot of pride, love and truth today. My big brother left for his OE, and we went to the airport to say sayonara. Now I have that ‘see ya see ya later’ song in my head.

Following on from my post last night, here is the other half of the sandwich which makes me the middle child family jam (the sweet bit, haha).

This is my sister Vic. She is a kindy teacher. And thats Jord. He is a vet. They both love cute stuff, which is good, because they are stinkin’ adorable.

Back at Massey University for this shoot. Love it.

Needless to say, Mum and Dad were pretty chuffed with their christmas presents this year.

This is my brother. He is a rock star. Hes going to live in London the day after tomorrow. I’m going to miss him.
And that’s Gem. She is a soldier. Will also miss her.

We shot these around the ground of Massey University, a close second for my favorite portrait shoot location in Wellington (after Brooklyn Central Park). Let me know if you want to have your loved ones shot* there, I will throw in a complimentary kissing of feet.

*ps “shot” photographically speaking, no guns involved.

Imagine you’re the mother of a two year old boy. They’re not known for their quiet natures, those two year olds.

Ok, now double him, and add another rowdy 5 year old boy. For fun.

Feeling tired?

How about another boy yet to arrive to top things off?

While all children are beautiful blessings, I’m not sure any Mum would ever wish to have four boys under five! Rachel however, is a woman of true fortitude, who handles her loud bunch with absolute ease. In fact she doesn’t even LOOK tired.

While the subjects were a bit of a handful, they certainly did not want for cuteness, nor the boy version of beauty.

I’ve been trying to push this location – Brooklyn Central Park – for the last 6 months, but the Crump’s were the first family to believe me when I told them IT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE IN WELLINGTON. I will be insisting on shooting here again and again in the future. If you’re keen on a family portrait shoot at Central Park be sure to get in touch.
