Andrea and Andrew (the Andys) were married in March on the forecourt of a tiny chapel at Makara in Wellington. They say that rain on your wedding day is good luck (how they figure that I’m not too sure), but what is good luck is when the lucky rain only sprinkles down for a few worrisome minutes before peeling away to reveal a perfect overcast day. Particularly when you have planned an al fresco reception and an outside ceremony!

This wedding day embodied everything I love in a kiwi wedding: some cute diy aspects, simple but elegant details, a stunning natural setting, a bevy of friends and family working together make things happen, and an adorable loved up couple. It was relaxed, calm and intimate.

We took the photos in a private garden that neighbored the church (thank you!!), and Andrea’s one request was that we got a shot of them in the long grass with white flowers. She wanted it to look like they were lost together in a huge meadow. I was initially very enamored with this concept, until I noticed a distinct lack of long-grass-meadows… Up the street a bit though there was a small patch off to the side of the road, long dry grass, white flowers and all (the odd blackberry thorn and thistle too, but we won’t mention those). It looked like nothing really, a bit of roadside scruff. The Andys took some convincing. Very trustingly though we gave it a go. You’ll see the ‘meadow’ shots later in this blog post – I think you’ll agree, with a bit of creative cropping and a tiny bit of clever cloning, it really is amazing how a photograph can tell such bald face fibs! Beautiful, bountiful, romantic, meadow-y fibs.

Thank you Andys, you totally nailed it.

blinking kitten gif, cute kitten blinking, pet photography, wellington photography, wellington portraits

Today my two great loves combined: photography and kittens.

I had soooo much fun playing with little Meatball, and just quietly I think she had a ball too.

When I have a bit more time I am definitely going to try and do something about figuring out how to monetise pet photography – that would truely be living the dream!

Photographing little Asa was quite the privilege, as his beautiful Mama is an extremely talented (international) photographer (of mystery) herself.

Asa was a little older than most at his newborn portrait session so he was wide awake and bright eyed for the photos, which I personally LOVE. The eyes are the window to the soul after all, although it does make posing a bit impossible. As Mama can create beautiful photos herself, I wanted to focus on getting plenty of photos of the whole family together, and especially mum with bubs.

I love to create a mixture of posed and crafted images as well as my favourite, natural documentary/lifestyle type images that offer a glimpse into what life with a new baby is (sometimes) like.

Nikki and Mark had the perfect recipe for their wedding day just a few weeks ago. Beautiful autumn light at Sudbury Fields, delightful styling by Twig and Arrow, and Kapiti’s best wedding celebrant.

The only teeny tiny glitch was when their chosen photographer called to explain that she was ill and couldn’t shoot their wedding day. Like any quality professional though Sarah had already arranged a replacement (me) to step in.

I’m usually the preparation queen when it comes to weddings, I like my ducks to be nicely aligned, so a surprise shoot like this did put me on the back foot a little. However, ducks be gone, all of the stars and the planets aligned on Nikki and Mark’s wedding day. Perfect weather, perfect setting, perfect couple, perfect light. I got so excited during the creative shoot I was actually squealing and hopping around.

Nikki and Mark might just be one of the best loved couples I have ever encountered. If I had a dollar for every happy tear that was shed during the reception… actually the whole day… I would be a rich girl.
The moment Nikki’s Dad came in and first saw her in her wedding dress, during the beautiful ceremony where they linked hands and we heard “these are the hands that will grow old in mine, the hands that will hold our babies, and hold me in bed at night”, and then the reception speeches… well, my viewfinder got a bit fogged up.

It really was a beautiful day.

Nikki and Mark thank you so much for being gorgeous, and for coping so well with being sprung with me at the last minute. I absolutely loved photographing your wedding, I hope you treasure your photos, and each other forever.

From Nikki: “The pics on your blog are truly spectacular. They somehow captured the day so perfectly. I cried my eyes out when I saw them. But amazingly so did people who weren’t even there, just goes to show how well the photos portrayed they day.”

I am glowing.

This song for the first dance.
