This beautiful boy, and his little brother and sister, mum and dad, came down from Waiouru last weekend to see me. Their session was planned about 6 months out – way to make a girl feel special.

We walked down to a crazy nook that is right in the middle of town, but that no one ever goes in. The walls are 4 stories high – white painted bricks. It is a sight to behold.

You can’t help but feel small.

So Harry had a jump.

There is quite an art to photographing newborns. An art, I’m hesitant to say, I’m not sure I’ve quite mastered YET. Not having had my own children (YET!) I feel a bit of a novice with the itty-bitty bubs.
When I heard local newborn legend Jo-“move over Anne Geddes”-Frances was holding a newborn workshop course in Wellington this weekend just been, I leapt at the chance to learn some tips and tricks from the master.

I learned a HEAP, got inspired AS, and got my baby fill for at least the next 24 hours, after photographing not one but FIVE beautiful bundles. The set ups below were beautifully crafted by Jo (but I took the photos). In the afternoon we had the chance to create our own little set up, and even in the face of an enormous array of colourful props my current passion for neutral tone on tone and white won out. I chose the little vintage bonnet and set my baby (Florence, aw!) up in a wooden bowl with some white fluff. So those shots are the only ones you won’t see repeated on the blogs of all the other workshopers!

So, I’ve pretty much mastered cuddling… but when it comes to molding and sculpting, I might have some practice to do.And that’s where you come in: I’m offering complimentary newborn sessions for Sept-Nov! Yay! I’m neeeearly all booked up though, so if you’re expecting in the next couple months, be sure to get in touch asap. Babies need to be under two weeks at the time of the session, please.

Many thanks to Jo, Amy and Sharisse at Jo Frances Photography I loved the course! And to any Mummy’s of our model bubbies reading this – THANK YOU (you guys make gorgeous kids, you lucky things!)

Winter is crap.

Thankfully we’re nearing the end of this dark and deary season. I find myself completely bored and uninspired when the weather is cold. All I want to do is curl up in bed and sleep until summer rolls around again. So to keep myself going, I’ve been working hard on some personal projects. When I heard about Bethany (above) and her desire to become NZ’s next top model, I thought she would make a great willing subject for a little bit of fun.

Then I saw her freckles.

And I knew it was going to be a great shoot. I made plans.  I bought “props”.

Then it rained.

We managed to convene for a whole 20 minutes to capture a few quick shots of little Beth. Unbelievably she is only 8. But she has the maturity and confidence of a woman much older. I was so supremely impressed by her ability to have no expression on her face but still manage to look completely gorgeous, captivating and intriguing. She can move her face the tiniest fraction and look COMPLETELY different. I absolutely love her face. She is a JOY to photograph. SO photogenic. I’ve never met anyone quite like it.

And then, when I’d got what I want, I asked her to show me her ‘model moves’. And she did. If someone put me on the spot like that, I would probably just start to cry. This kid is a pro. My processing on these portraits of Bethany is different to my normal family work. A little darker. A little ‘shopped’. But I am loving it!

Dodge and burn! How did I ever get by without you??

I’d love to hear what you think. And Bethany is looking for more ‘work’ if you would like to have her model for your photos too.
