These two are the offspring of my high school “tutor group buddy”, they have her big brown eyes and her sense of adventure. We got together for a little mini session at the Rose Garden at the Botanical Gardens in Wellington. This isn’t usually my favourite spot to shoot, because there is no shade for a bright day, and the gardens photograph quite messily for my clean and neutral aesthetic, but we were blessed with a perfectly warm overcast afternoon, no wind (!!), and the kids were all ready to go!

Katrina and Richard are some of the sweetest, most humble souls I’ve come across. They are so perfectly matched, so happy together. They chose to have a small intimate wedding ceremony with only 40 of their favourite people at the White House restaurant in Oriental Bay, overlooking a glorious blue sky day. I loved photographing this wedding that was completely devoid of pretense and all completely about family and love – but in a cuddly lovely way not a saccharine corny way!

Because their priority was to spend time with their guests and enjoy a stunning meal after their ceremony, we did their bridal portraits before the wedding, and a cute as can be first look, at Te Papa museum. And although they told me they were difficult to photograph, I knew when I saw the way they looked at each other, that we would have no trouble at all! They didn’t stop giggling the whole time.

Camille and Thomas were another family who took up my pre-christmas mini session special! We met on a lovely spring evening at the Botanical Gardens and got straight down to business. If by business you mean running around, playing cricket, and dancing the Gangnam Style dance that is! Isn’t Milly lucky to have such a caring, Cuddly big brother!

This amazing close knit family were such fun to photograph. We took ourselves down to the park equipped with baseball bats and bicycles ready to PLAY! I really love family portrait sessions that are about more than just standing in front of a camera looking awkward. With little kids I think the key to great photos is to get them involved in something that they really enjoy, not only do you document the things that are most important at each life stage (but quickly forgotton) but you also get to see your kids in their element, racing around. Your family laughing and playing together! What could be better than that?

I always make a plan with my clients before their shoot, get to know what their family likes to do at the weekends, what they do for fun. And then we do it! Everyone quickly forgets the camera is near, and magic happens! For me the little details and the interactions between family members are so much more interesting and important to capture and a serene shot of everyone standing still and smiling at the camera. My photography is about REAL life, real families. Each shoot is custom designed and tailored to your crew.

The photos speak for themselves!

I made the trek all the way to Palmerston North to visit this amazing family. Luckily my dear sister lives in Bulls so I could kill two birds with one stone and visit her on the way.

This blended family was one of the most amazing, loving groups I have ever met. There are 4 big boys – two from Mum’s side and two from Dad’s – and then little baby Honor is the magic ingredient that completes the family. The tender way these boys cared for their baby sister was absolutely gorgeous to watch, they utterly adore her! There wasn’t a single hint of jealousy or the usual sibling bickering, these beautiful kids are as lovely inside as they are on the outside. It was an absolute pleasure to capture, and well worth the journey. Add to that an amazing lifestyle farm (with LLAMAS!), a couple of dogs and a perfectly overcast day. There was one happy little photographer here at this family portrait shoot.
